  1. Focus on the present. Everything that is important to you is happening right NOW, not yesterday and not tomorrow. Today is a wonderful gift and you must be present to fully enjoy it. A great way to bring yourself back to the present moment is to focus on your breathing; another way is to read #5 below.
  2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. There are a plethora of reasons one might be in doubt about something, but it seems that fear tops the list. Fear can freeze you in your tracks and cause you to doubt yourself. When you find that fear has taken control of your situation, simply take the next SMALL step, something to keep the wheels turning and to kill the inertia.
  3. Sleep less. If you sleep 8 hours a night that means you will sleep 1/3rd of your life away as we all know. So, let’s say you’re 40 years old and you live to be 80 – by sleeping only 6 hours a night you can add about 3.3 years of waking existence to your life!! Most people don’t really need a full 8 hours of sleep a night anyway.
  4. Travel, travel, travel. Hands down the best stress reliever known to man! Travel to be renewed.
  5. Use the Rubber Band Method. The Rubber Band method can be used as a “stress reducer” for those that become irritated or angry easily – it can also be used to bring you back to the present moment. Put a rubber band on your wrist and whenever you feel like you want to lash out because you are losing control of your emotions you stretch the band and snap it repeatedly against your wrist until you calm yourself. Just don’t get too crazy with this one though.
  6. Become excellent at something. Find something that you are good at and that you enjoy doing and focus on becoming excellent at it. See #12.
  7. Ignore insults. If you do anything with any success, especially something grand, there will be haters – that’s life. Don’t let snide remarks or put-downs get you all excited and upset. Use these insults as fuel to do better and understand that jealousy is at the heart of these insults.
  8. Always question what you have been told to be true. Do the research and seek out the truth on your own. Don’t let others agenda’s dictate what you believe. Remember, there are differing claims as to what constitutes truth.
  9. Give mom a call.
  10. Stop focusing on the negative behavior you want to eliminate, and start focusing on the positive behavior you want to begin. Life is what we focus on, focus on the negative and that’s what you’ll get.
  11. Stop saying “I can’t.”
  12. Understand the 10,000 Hour Rule. Mastery requires intense practice, keen observation, refinement, and more practice. It is said that if you want to master something you must put in at least 10,000 hours of practice. If you practice 2 hours a day it will take you 13.6 years to master it.
  13. Notice the small things in life. We allow our yearning for achievement and material satisfaction to overshadow the precious little things that life has to offer, they are all around us! In our never ending quest to experience the more seductive “highs,” we have lost sight of the fact that most of life, indeed a vast majority of it, is made up of small things and small moments. The things themselves may be small, but failing to appreciate them has huge ramifications for your happiness and well-being!
  14. Stop comparing yourself to others. Just stop already! One of the main reasons we’re not content with ourselves and with our lives is that we continually compare ourselves to other people. Learning from others is an important way to become better at something, or understanding something better, but the problems arise as soon as you start comparing.
  15. Drop expectations. You want to be miserable and frustrated? Then keep expecting that things will turn out a certain way. I stopped expecting anything in life years ago and my life is sweeter because of it. When I stopped expecting certain outcomes I became more appreciative when things did turn out for the good, whereas if I expected them to turn out good and they did, there wasn’t that same amount of appreciation or joy.
  16. Learn to be the person that makes others feel special. There is one thing all of us have in common: We all want to be liked, to feel special, and to feel we are important. It’s actually quite simple to make someone feel special, you can start by giving out more compliments, by being more understanding, by being more helpful, and by letting them know you really care.
  17. Institute a profound curiosity about this world.
  18. Say NO to the ones who abuse your time. Time is a precious commodity, one that can’t be renewed – once it’s gone, it’s gone forever, so protect it at all costs.
  19. Do at least 1 crazy thing every year. This will help to keep you from feeling old, and it will keep things interesting. We all need to unwind and let it all hang out occasionally, so what are you waiting for? It’s time to add a little spice to your life and keep things fun. Bungee jump anyone?
  20. Stop taking life so seriously. When you gaze at a picture of the universe or even at one of the earth it becomes abundantly clear that we aren’t all that important in the big picture of things. So why are you taking life so damn serious then? Enjoy your time here on earth – don’t ruin it by stressing out about things that don’t really matter.
